In 1976, Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort on the North Coast of Mombasa became the second Sarova property, and with it the first entry of Sarova into the tourism industry. Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort, set on 22 acres of tropical gardens with one of the longest seafronts on the East African coast, provides a range of facilities and quality of service that set it amongst the finest resorts. In 1986, Lion Hill became part of the Sarova chain. Today known as the Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, it features 67 superbly appointed chalet bedrooms and is situated in the heart of the Rift Valley in Lake Nakuru National Park. Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge offers luxury accommodation and amenities that are unsurpassed. The lodge lies within the privately owned Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary and provides the ultimate base from which to explore and stands aloft a raised ridge capturing an impressive view of the encompassing hills. Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge is modeled on a German Fort, commemorating the fighting that took place in this part of the world during the First World War between the British, who were Colonizers of Kenya, and Germans, colonizers of what used to be Tanganyika; fighting under the command of the legendary General von Lettow Vorbeck who was never defeated. Some famous battles took place here, notably The Battle of Salaita Hill, which resulted in two Victoria Cross Medals for the British, the highest award for outstanding gallantry usually given posthumously. One such VC holder is buried in the War Cemetery in Voi.
